Abstract

A cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted in the Provincial Teaching Children’s Hospital of “Mártires de las Tunas”, between the 1st of January 2006 and the 31st of December 2007, with the objective of determining some of the epidemiological variables involved in the occurrence of accidents during paediatric age. Family members of children who had been admitted into the hospital due to these kinds of accidents were interviewed. The following variables were assessed: age, sex, type of accident, month, day of the week and time of the accident. These variables were then processed and the different percentages were obtained. Results show that the most affected group was the one aged 5 to 15 and comprised of males. The most frequent accidents were trauma, and more than half occurred at home. Most accidents took place in the months of July and August, and on Saturdays and Sundays.
