Abstract

It is very important to be updated on breastfeeding information to be able to provide adequate and precise knowledge through health education aimed at first time mothers as well as those who have birthed more than one child.
Most parents lack knowledge and have many doubts regarding aspects related to breastfeeding.
In this article a bibliographic review was conducted, the results of which demonstrate the advantages of maternal breastfeeding and basic recommendations such as daily feedings, the time of each feeding, different positions for breastfeeding, as well as possible complications breastfeeding may cause in the mother’s breast.
The document should provide an essential resource for nurses involved in maternity education in both the prenatal period in primary care and the postpartum period in specialized care.
