Abstract

To nourish patients with artificial preparations and more specifically via parenteral feeding (when the enteral route is not feasible) is a relatively new technique that affords important benefits to malnourished people or to those with the potential risk of becoming malnourished. Nonetheless parenteral feeding is not risk free and entails a series of possible complications.
The administration of parenteral nutrition requires de application of specific care measures aimed at the prevention or treatment of such complications.
Hence, the importance of having standardised care plans in place, which besides ensuring the quality of the care delivered, also facilitates the planning of nursing activities.
