Abstract

Based on a review of the bibliography, we aim to analyse whether there is an increase in patient anxiety following major cardiac surgery and what future repercussions that might have on his or her mental health.
Anxiety is western countries accounts for a large percentage of the state’s health resources. In the field of nursing, we could help reduce and ameliorate the progressive deterioration of the patient by detecting signs and symptoms that might lead us to suspect a bad management of the emotional states the patient presents during the hospital stay.
I carried out tag word searches in MEDLINE  and examined the secondary references provided in papers relating to the quality of life of cardiac patients, at the adult intensive care unit (aged 19-64 years).  The search did not find any papers that specifically dealt with the cardiac patient and anxiety and its repercussions on his or her cognoscitive functioning, despite the great interest it arises due to the little information available with regard to the prevention and subsequent treatment of the patient following his experiences at the intensive care unit (ICU) and his or her psychological recovery which is becoming an increasing health problem.
Consequently, given the relevance and clinical repercussion of stress problems and anxiety, as well as their social and economic impact, together with their excessive medicalisation, leads to de-responsabilization: a lack of prevention.
