Abstract
The General La won Health (1986) advocates the integration of all actions regarding mental health into the general health system and foresees the development of rehabilitation and psychosocial reinsertion services. In the autonomous community of Valencia, the political commitments of this philosophy are set forth in Law 8/1987 of 4 december, whereby the Valencia Health Service was created. The Order of 3rd February 1997 compiles the classification and technical characteristics of specific structures for rehabilitation and residential facilities for chronic mentally ill patients.
One of these services is the Centre for Rehabilitation and Social Integration for chronic mentally ill patients (CRIS). CRIS centres are under the authority of the Social Welfare Counsellor’s Department and the figure of the nurse specialising in mental health (mental health nurse) does not appear in their organisational chart. This is so even though in the Master Plan for Mental Health and Psychiatric Help of the autonomous community of Valencia (2001) currently in effect, the duties of nursing personnel working at CRIS centres and as stated within the plan are specified.
