Abstract

In the light of the results obtained in the data collection work throughout the months of March, April, and May 2008 on the incidence of non-urgent common pathologies seen at the paediatric emergency department at the Puerta del Mar university hospital, Cádiz, we hereby propose health education as a training process to make the carer responsible for the care of the patient, teaching the carer the knowledge, attitudes and basic skills for the defence, the promotion of individual and collective health. In other words, it is an attempt to make the patient’s carer adopt the necessary measures to solve these pathologies without having to come to the Emergency Department.
We present a simple, accessible and pedagogic tool intended to reach a wide range of the carer’s population from any social stratum and any cultural background (foreigner).
Objetives:

• To increase the level of knowledge.
• To satisfy the needs and expectations of the patient’s carer, fostering their self-confidence.
• To reduce the level of anxiety in the face of foreseeable complications.
• To increase the trust on the nursing professional.
• To decrease the number of patient’s admissions in the emergency service and to consequently reduce healthcare costs.

Procedure: statistical control and triage study on paediatric emergency involving the most common pathologies treated during March, April and May 2008 (vomiting and fever).
