Abstract

Giving up breastfeeding as a regular way to feed our children is normal in our society and represents a public health problem with a significant impact on child health.
One of the most direct causes and one of the main factors for the interruption of breastfeeding, are some health practices which were implemented in the middle of last century creating the bottle feeding culture as an alternative to breastfeeding.
The aim of this paper is to emphasize the key role of the health professional in the initiation and maintenance of lactation because, contrary to popular belief, putting the baby to the breast is not an innate ability of the mother, but a process of adaptation and learning.
