Abstract

The nursing staff at the neonatal unit of Hospital Txagorritxu optimize nursing care through the use of standardized care plans integrated into the process of nursing care. In 2008, plans were adapted to the neonatal care tool "Zaineri Berria" which collects nursing care tasks and activities based on Virginia Henderson and the Biomedical System.
The aim of this study was to analyze the care plans offered in the unit to determine the prevalence of needs and nursing diagnoses as well as the different systems and the collaborative problems they pose.
Material and methods: cross-sectional descriptive observational study of the care plans of the Neonatal Unit of Hospital Txagorritxu made between January the 1st and May 31st, 2009.
Results: the most prevalent needs were learning (99.05%) and feeding (94.33%). Regarding the nursing diagnoses, the poor knowledge (94.33%) and the risk of deterioration of the sleep pattern (87.73%) were the most prevalent ones. The systems most altered were skin and subcutaneous tissue (86.99%) and endocrine system (76.41%) and the collaborative problems were infection (85.84%) and hypoxia (69.81%).
Conclusions: the most prevalent findings highlight the important role played by nurses in their educational and preventive care to the newborn and their family. This study highlights the importance of independent area nurse in the Neonatal Unit. The software "Zaineri Berria" has facilitated the development and monitoring of the process of nursing care to the neonate
