Abstract

Introduction: phenytoin is an anticonvulsant drug which can be administered orally or intravenously. It has a narrow therapeutic margin justifying the monitoring of serum levels to adjust the dose and reaching the desired therapeutic effects, reducing their toxicity and ensuring patient compliance. The nurses’ roles make their intervention essential in the monitoring of phenytoin.
Objective: to analyze the interventions of nurses in the monitoring of phenytoin.
Material and methods: descriptive study based on professional experience and literature references, databases such as Pubmed and Cochrane were used.
Results: Nursing intervention in pharmacovigilance: pharmacovigilance interventions require the knowledge that is detailed in this section; security in the preparation and administration of phenytoin: The nurses make use of the five correct methods and have knowledge of oral and intravenous administration; sampling technique in the determination of serum levels of phenytoin: Requires having reached the competence to know what material is needed and take into account certain considerations.
Conclusions: the monitoring of phenytoin controls the appearance of side effects, helps adjusting the dose individually, and allows a safer administration of the drug.
Drug-monitoring improves control of extreme situations and increases survival in serious diseases.
Nurses have an important role, are the first to detect potential adverse effects. The nurses must have adequate knowledge on pharmacovigilance, safety and techniques used in the monitoring of phenytoin to provide quality care.
