Abstract

The gastrostomy is commonly used in patients expected to require tube feeding for an extended time, being more desirable in the long-term than parenteral nutrition or a naso-gastric tube. This is an alternative in patients with an inability to swallow.
Management of gastrostomy technique is not complicated, but we must take into account a number of considerations. Nurses have a crucial role in the care of patients with a gastrostomy, and therefore they must have acquired the right skills, in order to provide the best care, and to train properly the patient in self care, and to prevent or resolve possible complications that may arise. This paper aims to show the different techniques, care and the many complications that can arise with a gastrostomy.
