Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a serious and growing global epidemic; more than 100 million of the world\'s adult population suffer from it. We carried out a descriptive study in 2008-2009 with the aim of determining the level of patient knowledge related to self foot care, and the characteristics related to the minimum level of diabetes education in the health area of the José Martí Polyclinics of the Gibara municipality, Holguín, Cuba. The universe consisted of 100 diabetic patients, and the sample of 68 representing the 68%, a survey was conducted which collected general information about the disease. We analyzed variables of interest: the average age was between 50 and 60 years, 60% of the population was composed by the group of patients who suffered the disease less than 10 ago, 30% represented the insulin group, 27% of the study population smoked, 95% of those attending the specialist knew the risk factors, 70% inspected their feet, 30% did not go to a podiatrist, 52.6% of patients with claudication were smokers. In addition, we found that 20% had no knowledge about their disease, 60% had minimal knowledge and only 20% demonstrated knowledge of the subject, 50% of respondents reported having been trained by the nursing staff.
