Abstract

Purpose: to determine the reproductive health knowledge that adolescent students of a high school have.
Methodology: the study design was descriptive, across a high school in the urban area of the state of Durango. The study population was 133 adolescents. This was a convenience sample. We developed a survey instrument to identify the level of knowledge they had regarding adolescent reproductive health with a Cronbach alpha of 73, containing 10 questions which gather data about the start of sexual activity, knowledge of contraceptive methods, sexually transmitted diseases, where do they get information about contraception, if they have had sexual intercourse and sexual risks they are exposed to.
Results: we found that the most popular contraceptive methods by adolescents were pills 79,7% and 78,9% condom, one of the sexually transmitted diseases that adolescents have more knowledge of is HIV with 67,7% and the source of information about contraceptive methods are teachers with 73,7%, parents with a 66,9% and television and media with 63,3%.
Conclusion: according to the results obtained in this research study, teens start having sex at an early age between 13 and 14 years, however, the adolescent begins to acquire contraceptives for safe sex practices and to obtain information about contraception from teachers, parents and the media (television).
