Abstract

Background: Jaundice in the newborn is, mostly, a physiological condition caused by increased blood bilirubin. Hyperbilirubinemia has been defined as significant when serum bilirubin reaches figures greater than or equal to 12 mg/dl in newborns with 25-48 hours of life, greater than or equal to 15 mg/dl between 49-72 hours of life, and greater than or equal to 17 mg/dl older than 72 hours of life. In full-term healthy newborns, it has been observed recently a close relationship between an increased incidence of hyperbilirubinemia and breastfeeding.
Objectives: To describe the diagnosis and treatment of neonatal jaundice and nursing interventions focused on the child care with phototherapy and the establishment of breastfeeding or bottle feeding with the aim of reducing complications from jaundice.
