Abstract

The real extent of physical activity in the rehabilitation process and its effectiveness in fighting diseases throughout the health-disease process which have been responsible for high mortality and morbidity in our areas of health is increasingly the subject of controversies. We performed a descriptive, observational study on the use of exercise in patients with chronic non-communicable diseases (NCD) and medical specialists and residents in Comprehensive General Medicine (CGM) in the municipality of Las Tunas (Cuba). The sample consisted of 122 physicians throughout the province and 67 patients belonging to the health areas of Gustavo Aldereguía y Piti Fajardo Policlínic, in the municipality of Las Tunas. Both groups answered a survey to characterize the prevalence of NCD and to describe the practice of physical exercising. The data obtained showed that in males and in the age group 60-69 years is where NCD are most prevalent, with hypertension and heart disease being the most common. We also determined that exercising in patients and medical staff is low. The sources of information were the primary sources through surveys. Statistical analysis techniques used were the percentage value and survey synthesis according to semantic grouping qualitative techniques to form categories with the highest degree of generality.
