Abstract

We performed a retrospective descriptive study, in order to determine the clinical and epidemiological factors related to intestinal parasitism in the Policlínico Docente Universitario Pedro del Toro Saad. The universe was represented by 125 children aged between 1 and 10 years and the sample was finally composed of 83 children, according to inclusion and exclusion criteria established.
The information was collected through a survey designed for this purpose. The results were expressed in simple frequency distribution tables and association of variables to facilitate analysis and discussion.
In the sample the predominant groups were boys between 4 and 6 years old. Abdominal pain and diarrhea were the most frequent symptoms. Epidemiologic factors predisposing to intestinal parasitism were the presence of vectors in the home and not washing their hands before eating and after defecation. The
Enterobius vermicularis and Giardia lamblia were the most frequently diagnosed parasites. In the majority of cases there was only a single parasite. We recommend further community intervention studies, based on the identified factors in order to help change the problems studied.
