Abstract

Osteomyelitis is a bone infection which can be classified into acute and chronic. The former is usually resolved within four to six weeks. Clinical manifestations may be continuous or characterized by recurrent outbreaks. The causes of osteomyelitis may be bacterial, fungal or viral infections. The most common pathogen is Staphylococcus aureus.
This paper presents the case of a man 40 years old with no relevant previous medical history who was admitted to the trauma department for evaluation of a calcaneal fracture a month earlier and a suspected malignancy. After the diagnostic tests the diagnosis was osteomyelitis.
The aim of this study was to develop an individualized plan of nursing care for this patient. We used the Henderson’s fourteen needs assessment and NANDA, NIC and NOC taxonomies.
