Abstract
Peripheral arterial disease, even in asymptomatic patients is an important predictor of adverse cardiovascular prognosis in relatively young patients. A reduction in the ankle-brachial index (ABI) or ratio is a strong independent predictor of cardiovascular mortality in patients with peripheral arterial disease.
For this reason, the detection of peripheral arterial disease by measuring the ankle-brachial index can help identify even asymptomatic patients with the established disease.
This detection is feasible in primary care. Primary care nurses require having the skills and knowledge necessary to perform this procedure.
This disease is defined as any ankle-brachial index <0,9. Early diagnosis is of fundamental importance for the implementation of appropriate treatment. All patients should receive health education on risk factors and further help and support to change lifestyles. With the support of the entire team, we aim to reduce cardiovascular mortality and improve quality of life of all persons with PAD.
