Abstract

The term postpartum depression refers to any nonpsychotic depressive illness suffered by the mother during the first year of the baby's life. It is a little-studied phenomenon with high prevalence in Spain, between 8 and 25% and serious consequences for the mother and for their partners and children.
The aim of this paper is to present the concept of postpartum depression, the factors favouring its appearance, treatment, nursing interventions and prevention strategies that lead to a decrease in prevalence.
