Abstract

Objective: to identify beliefs on alcohol consumption during pregnancy that pregnant women who consume alcohol have.
Methodology: the study design was descriptive through interviews with 23 pregnant women who reported drinking alcohol during pregnancy, to identify beliefs on the consumption of alcohol that pregnant women who consume this substance build under the theory of Serge Moscovici’s Social Representations.
Results: pregnant women built three social representations regarding the causes for which continue to consume alcohol, 1) because they have a vice or an addiction 2) due to depression, loneliness and abandonment by a partner during pregnancy 3) due to cravings, for socializing and because they believe it will not hurt them nor their child.
Conclusion: the main representation constructed by pregnant women who continued to consume alcohol during pregnancy was because they have a vice or an addiction, which is evident from the major causes and reasons that have to continue consuming alcohol.
