Abstract
An integral approach to postoperative acute pain has been dramatically developed in recent years, with elastomers or elastomeric pumps being a significant step forward in the field. Their design helps achieve pain control and patients' comfort because, if carefully managed, they allow a better mobility and a degree of patient’s autonomy, alarms’ avoidance, and a silent, safe, and well-controlled drug administration.
In the present paper, their main advantages, use, currently available models, most commonly used administration devices in our unit, and main nursing care requirements both in postanesthetic recovery unit and in regular hospital ward are reviewed, in order to help nursing staff become familiar with current devices.
