Abstract

Infant sudden death syndrome refers to death of an apparently healthy infant that cannot be explained after comprehensive investigation, environment examination and medical record review, with no death cause being identified. Nonetheless, many modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors for infant sudden death syndrome are surprisingly similar to the ones for asphyxia.
Purpose: To carry out a literature search and review regarding infant sudden death syndrome and environmental factors potentially related to it.
Method: A literature search was performed by means of the Andalusia\'s Public Health System meta-search engine Gerion. Search terms were "infant sudden death syndrome" and "environment". Data were collected by a single researcher.
Results and conclusions: 11 papers were selected and assessed.
Reported recommendations include: sleeping in supine position, use of a pacifier and a flat surface when sleeping; promoting breast feeding; systematic immunization; sleeping together and not sharing bed; avoid soft bed clothes, overheating, and smoking, alcohol, illicit drugs, and smoke exposure.
