Abstract

Static balance is crucial to maintain an erect position and for most part of functional activities, and lack of postural stability can impair its development. In order to evaluate static balance, various temporary posture and frequency parameters that are related to pressure center shifting should be assessed.
Several studies have shown that shoe type has an influence on static balance; thus, the characteristics of shoes (hardness, thickness, materials, slope, shape...) can influence posture maintenance and control.
Purpose: The present study is intended to analyze rocker (convex) sole shoes versus normal flat-sole running shoes influence on static balance.
Methods: A comparative study on static standing balance shifting has been carried out. Several influencing conditions, such as surface type and visual perception, have been assessed.
Conclusions: Rocker sole shoes have been shown to result in a greater lack of balance as compared with normal running shoes when assessed in all tested surface and vision conditions.
