Abstract

Purpose: A literature search and review was carried out on pain control and palliative procedures during labor, and particularly on the efficacy of epidural anesthesia and non-invasive techniques that can be applied by nurses.
Methods: A literature search was performed in Encuentr@, Cochrane, Medline, PubMed, Elsevier and Joanna Briggs databases.
Results: Epidural analgesia was found to be the most effective method for pain control during labor, compared to non-drug therapies; however, such analgesia technique is associated to a higher risk of complications during the procedure.
Conclusion: Nurses have a key role in non-drug pain therapy. Patients should know all methods currently available to manage pain, anxiety and fear, as well their associated risks.
