Abstract

The introduction of computers in schools has led to a need for a teaching methodology in computer science and use. Significant advances have been achieved in programming languages teaching, but not so in application systems. Nevertheless, nowadays a good command of such systems is a real need. Electronic spreadsheets as an application system are a part of curricula at many learning levels, and they reach a high educational value provided an appropriate methodology is used to promote the development of skills for problem solving and, in general terms, student personality development.
Developing an appropriate method to manage application systems should be a major task for teachers involved in computer use teaching. Real work activities are specifically related to such problems, and this has a significant didactic value. As a core matter, typical situations are approached: concept creation and procedures development for spreadsheet use learning in OpenOffice, through suggestions for their methodological structure development; moreover, details are included on spreadsheet emergence, development and basic features. As a final outcome, a strategy for methodological work is presented
