Abstract
Purpose: Vasovagal syncope is a relatively common disorder that can result in a number of adverse effects and a significantly reduced quality of life. Our main objective was to assess the efficacy of pacemaker implantation therapy to reduce recurrent vasovagal syncope events, and the implementation of a care plan to reduce anxiety and improve quality of life.
Methods: A longitudinal study in a single case was performed; a care plan based on Nanda diagnoses, NIC nursing procedures and NOC results was developed. The study was carried out from September 29, 2011 to January 21, 2012. A literature search and review, and a care plan were performed over the Practicum IV period at Hospital Rafael Méndez in Lorca.
Results: A care plan was developed and related references were reviewed.
Discussion and limitations: From a nursing perspective the importance of the main diagnosis and the role of nurses in information transmission should be emphasized.
Conclusions: Psychosocial therapy, added to pacemaker placement, is an effective therapeutic association, and pacemaker implantation does not result in a reduced syncope incidence; nevertheless, syncope consequences are lower.
