Abstract

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic central nervous system disease intermittently involving white matter and replacing it with a hardened tissue plate resulting in a lost or delayed ability of nerves to carry orders from brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. Multiple sclerosis is the most common central nervous system inflammatory disorder and the second leasing cause for neurological disability in young adults; usual age of onset is 25-35 years.

Disease course usually involves most functional neurological systems, with motor, sensitive, and cerebellar involvement being the most common changes. An irregular course with unpredictable exacerbations is most common. Besides the therapies acting on the disease course, an individually-tailored, multidisciplinary, specific symptomatic intervention is critical, with a shared goal being an improved quality of life.

In a physiotherapy setting, the main purpose is preventing and reducing deficits, and patient involvement is critical for the success of a program aimed at reaching a maximal function and integration into the community.
