Abstract
Adolescence is a developmental stage associated with changes, including sexual organs maturing, reproductive capacity development; and teenagers have their first sexual experiences. Understanding sexual behavior in adolescents helps to recognize risky behaviors and to develop activities intended to provide a good sexual education.
Purpose: To promote healthy, safe and successful sexual relations among adolescents; and to provide information helping them to avoid problems such as sexually-transmitted diseases (STD) or unwanted pregnancies.
Material and methods: A 50-question anonymous voluntary questionnaire was distributed to 102 adolescents aged 16-18 years in Southern Madrid area.
Results: mean age was 17.10 years. Among respondents, 50% have a partner and 72.55% have quite a lot of information. They believe, though, that being virgin (1.96%), not achieving an orgasm (2.94%), or using some specific postures (3.92%) can protect women from pregnancy. First sexual intercourse occurred when being between 15-17 years old in 71.43%, and a condom was used by 95.71%. Condoms are used consistently for all sexual relations by 75.71%, and pill is used by 15.71%. Few respondents (13.73%) know that condylomata are a STD and 31.37% of respondents do not know whether or not tuberculosis is a STD. Condoms protect from both STD and pregnancy according to 98.04% of respondents. A low proportion of respondents (13.73%) state that reciprocal masturbation can transmit AIDS, or believe (12.75%) that AIDS can be transmitted through dishes or glasses.
Conclusions: A significant lack of knowledge on pregnancy, contraception and STD acquisition routes has been observed.
