Abstract

Background: At present, cancer is one of the problems showing a highest incidence and morbidity in developed countries. Not only patients, but also family members are affected by the disease. Its impact is even higher in children and adolescents. In many cases, diagnosis is not disclosed to children and adolescents, which results in them being excluded from the process. This does not avoid, however, they being aware of existing stress and concern about the disease.

Purpose: To evaluate psychosocial impact of parental cancer on children and adolescents.

Methods: A qualitative investigation will be carried out based on a case series study. Study population will consist of 30 10-15-years-old children with a cancer-diagnosed father or mother and being aware of a parental disease but not knowing that a cancer diagnosis has been established. Data will be collected through interviews and focus group meetings, using various techniques. Later on, data will be analyzed and findings will be interpreted and reported.
