Abstract

Background: Atopic dermatitis is an inflammatory skin disease beginning in infancy or childhood, with a chronic and recurrent course, and mainly affecting children with a personal or family history of atopy.
Purpose: To characterize patients with atopic dermatitis, according to their clinical and epidemiological features.
Methods: A descriptive study on clinical and epidemiological characteristics of atopic dermatitis in the Department of Allergy, Hospital Pediátrico Universitario “Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja”, Holguín, from March 2011 to March 2012 was performed. Data were collected during visits in the clinic.
Results: More than half of the patients were 2 to 6 years old (52.21%). A female predominance was observed, 65 patients. Personal or family history of allergic diseases were found in 86.72% and 69.02%, respectively. Associated diseases were: bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis, and drug allergy. Main symptoms were itching (100%), scratching excoriation, and eczema.
Conclusions: A predominance of female, 2 to 6 years old, and urban patients was observed. Most of them had personal and/or family history of allergic disorders. Bronchial asthma was the most common associated disease, followed by allergic rhinitis. Most prevailing symptom was itching with a predominance of the pediatric clinical form.
