Abstract

From a psychosocial perspective, postpartum period involves a difficult experience for women due to newborn demands, a wish to do their best to fulfil a motherhood role, and lack of confidence on their abilities to fulfil such a role.

A number of studies have suggested that up to 20% of women will suffer a depression event during their life.

Risk for depression is thought to be especially high over the postpartum period.

Depressive disorders are a significant public health issue; women are more commonly involved and show a higher risk during pregnancy and postpartum.
