Abstract

While I was studying to become a nurse and during one of my holiday breaks I had the opportunity to participate as a couch in a summer camp called “Barretstown Gang” (Paul Newman Foundation). This organisation offers a program whereby children with cancer (and their families) from all over Europe are given the opportunity to participate n numerous activities opening their minds to experiences that are completely new to them, The theme of the camp was “Challenge, Success, Reflection, and Discovery”, all of it geared for the children to have fun. During the time I was there, I learnt to interact with the children and their “maturity” and “experiences” helped enlighten my soul. I also learnt the importance of active listening and empathy in any support relationship.
