Interculturalidad en una Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos

Resumen

Los enfermeros de las Unidades de Cuidados Intensivos se enfrentan a diario con situaciones de gravedad extrema y de muerte. En los últimos años, además de esta situación, se le une la gran afluencia de personas enfermas de otras étnias, por lo que se deben dejar a un lado los prejuicios y hacer un acercamiento hacia ellos con el ánimo de aprender y comprender otras formas de entender la vida y otras maneras de enfrentarse a la situación de enfermedad grave y muerte, sin tomar en consideración ideas y actitudes etnocentristas.

El objetivo de este trabajo es conocer la visión de los profesionales enfermeros de las Unidades de Cuidados Intensivos de las diferentes formas de afrontamiento de la enfermedad grave y de la muerte en las distintas culturas, desde el punto de vista antropológico. Es decir, hacer un acercamiento a todos estos fenómenos que se producen cuando en nuestro ámbito laboral entra una persona de una étnia diferente y debemos atenderle.
La idea principal es hacer tomar conciencia a los profesionales de que existe esta problemática y de la necesidad de un mayor conocimiento de otras formas de vida para conseguir el acercamiento a estos pacientes, desubicados de su medio natural y en unas condiciones de salud extremas, pues sólo desde el conocimiento y el respeto puede existir la coexistencia en términos de igualdad y de diferencia, es decir, dejar a un lado el etnocentrismo y enfocar los cuidados desde la interculturalidad.

Interculturality in an intensive Care Unit

Abstract:

Nurses in Intensive Care Units have to face extreme emergency situations and death on a daily basis. In recent years, to this, we need to ad the affluence of sick people from other ethnic groups. This makes it necessary for us to leave prejudice behind and to come closer to these people so that we can learn about their ways of life and other ways to handle a situation of extreme severity or even death, without taking into consideration other ethnocentric ideas or attitudes.
The purpose of this paper is to determine the vision that nursing professionals working in Intensive Care Units have on the different ways to approach severe disease and death in different cultural settings from an anthropological point of view. This involves an approximation to all the phenomena that take place in our work setting so that we get to understand people from an ethnic background different to ours.
The main objective is to make professionals aware of the existence of some problems and of the need to have a better understanding of other life styles in an effort to bring these patients closer, patients that on top of everything are away from their natural surroundings, in a strange environment, and in an extreme health status. It is only through this better understanding and respect that we can all coexist in terms of equality and difference. This entails putting ethnocentrism to a side and to approach healthcare from an interculturality perspective.
