Abstract
Evaluation of the implementation of protocols about diet advice and physical activity after diagnosis of gestational diabetes at the Murcian Health Service
Introduction: gestational diabetes (GDM) is one the most frequent metabolic complications during pregnancy. This is a type of diabetes that, as its name implies, only appears during pregnancy, and is associated with an increase in the risk of maternal and fetal morbimortality that can be prevented and/or reduced through adequate control. Without having objective figures, the prevalence of GDM in the Spanish population ranges between 7 and 12%.
The method used for diagnosis is prenatal screening (O´Sullivan Test) with an oral glucose overload and subsequent monitoring of glycemic levels between weeks 24 and 28 of pregnancy, or after the first prenatal appointment when there are risk factors for its development. Healthcare professionals play a critically important role, by providing health education, advice, and medical monitoring, in order to reduce maternal and fetal morbimortality.
Objective: to highlight the importance of implementing personalized protocols about nutrition and exercise for pregnant women diagnosed with diabetes immediately after diagnosis, in order to reduce the risk of maternal and fetal morbimortality by improving glycemic control, and thus also reduce the potential need to implement pharmacological treatment with insulin.
Methodology: a type of qualitative study based on an ad hoc survey and answered by a representative sample of Primary Care healthcare professionals from Murcia, involved in the diagnosis of gestational diabetes (37 participants).
Results: different inconsistencies were observed at the time of providing non-unified personalized diets under protocol by healthcare professionals; also the lack of a unique detailed protocol, as well as differences in prenatal monitoring follow-up (prenatal appointments) after the diagnosis of gestational diabetes.
