Abstract
Introduction: breastfeeding is the best way to feed newborns due to the many benefits provided. Different international organizations have driven the creation of the Initiative for a more Human Birth and Lactation (IHAN) in Spain, in order to protect, promote and support exclusive breastfeeding (EBF). The IHAN recommends that at least 75% of term newborns should be fed with EBF from birth until hospital discharge.
Objectives: to determine the prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding at discharge from the Gynecology and Obstetrics Unit of the Hospital Virgen de la Salud of Toledo, and its relationship with other factors.
Method: an observational, cross-sectional and prospective study for the primary endpoint; and for secondary endpoints, an analytical case-control study following non-random consecutive sampling during one month. A sample size of 163 women was estimated, who completed an anonymous survey at hospital discharge.
Results: the EBF rate at discharge was 39.3% (CI: 32.4-45.5). Regarding the relationship between EBF and the factors studied, statistical significant results were only obtained in terms of type of delivery.
Discussion/Conclusion: the current situation of the unit is very far from international recommendations, particularly in terms of Cesarean deliveries, which represents a negative influence for breastfeeding. The results obtained can be useful in order to design strategies orientated to an adequate support and counseling for breastfeeding.
