Abstract

Introduction: the COVID-19 pandemic has affected reproductive and perinatal health, through the infection as well as indirectly as a consequence of changes in medical care, social politics or social and economic circumstances.

Objective: the objective of the present study is to explore the impact of the pandemic and the measures adopted on the initiation and maintenance of breastfeeding. Methodology: a qualitative study through semistructured indepth interviews until reaching theoretical saturation. The interviews were conducted by telephone, and then transcribed and analysed using Braun and Clarke thematic analysis.

Results: thirty (30) interviews were conducted in total. Five primary categories and ten associated subcategories came up: information received, unequal support by professionals during the pandemic, social and family support regarding breastfeeding; impact of lockdown and social restriction measures, and emotional distress caused by the pandemic.

Conclusions: online support groups for breastfeeding, through applications such as WhatsApp®, Facebook® or Instagram®, have represented important sources of information and support for breastfeeding. The midwife has been the main profile identified as providing formal support to breastfeeding during this period. Besides, the social restrictions imposed by the pandemic have had a positive impact on women in terms of bonding and breastfeeding.
