Abstract

Newborns undergo a number of painful procedures after birth; pain management by healthcare workers has a critical role in newborn care.
The present review aimed at evaluating effectiveness of breast feeding for pain relief in newborns undergoing painful procedures, compared to various non-drug methods currently available. A review of current scientific evidence is reported.
A number of studies have shown that breast feeding is an effective way to relieve pain in newborns. Breast feeding was the most effective among non-drug methods, with some additional benefits being achieved, such as an enhancement of breast feeding and active mother's involvement in newborn's care. Thus, breast feeding should be implemented as a routine practice for pain relief in newborns undergoing minor painful procedures. When breast feeding per se is not feasible, maternal milk supplements should be considered as an alternative method.
