Abstract

Midwife\'s behavior in the face of gender violence A proposal for preventive intervention by the Teaching Unit at Salamanca
In 1998, a high international priority was ascribed by WHO to gender violence (GV) prevention by health services, and the importance of strong prevention programs to cope with the problem was clearly recognized as a useful approach for such a complex health issue. The only strategy for primary prevention having shown some effectiveness has been the development of school programs. This is the reason why the Teaching Unit at Salamanca developed a school program for GV prevention in a high school (instituto de Education Secondary Obligatoria [ESO]).
Purpose: To contribute to GV prevention from a midwifery specialty point of view.
Material and methods: A preventive school program has been developed, based on a multidisciplinary approach, by a midwife, nurse-midwife specialty residents and teachers at an ESO pre-high school. A sample of 286 students (age range, 12.4-16.5 y) was selected.
Three sessions were carried out at each grade (from 6th to 10th grades) during several tutoring periods throughout the school year 2011-2012, and an intervention to make teachers aware of the problem was also performed.
A qualitative evaluation has been done, based on the selection of two 12-subject groups including two randomly selected students (male or female) from each school grade. An additional evaluation was performed for teaching staff.
Results: Students showed a high satisfaction with the intervention (mean score, 9.1 in a 0-10 scale). The program has helped to recognize gender stereotypes, gender inequality, and the absence of men partaking in household chores, and to understand GV and create a refusal attitude to GV.
A high satisfaction was also reported by the high school managing team and teaching staff (mean score, 9.2). They believe the school intervention has made themselves more aware of the issue.
Conclusion: Our evaluation shows a high acceptance for midwife intervention in a school setting. A positive contribution to GV prevention has been shown, although continued interventions and more rigorous evaluations will be needed in the future.
