Abstract

Objective: to identify the most prevalent nursing diagnoses and interventions among hospitalized women.
Method: cross-sectional descriptive study. The population consisted of female patients admitted to the women´s module of the penitentiary psychiatric hospital in Alicante. Data were retrieved from the clinical record of the inpatients. Age was analyzed as the socio-demographic variable using its mean and standard deviation. The NANDA nursing diagnosis classification and the NIC nursing intervention classification were used. The analysis was carried out using the SPSS software. A descriptive analysis of the variables was carried out, presenting the results in absolute frequencies and percentages.
Results: the most prevalent diagnoses found were: sedentarism, nutritional imbalance by excess, dentition deterioration, deficit of recreational activities, thinking process disorders, constipation, self-care deficit (dressing, self-grooming, embellishment), risk of unstable glycemia, risk of liver function deterioration, risk of social interaction deterioration, defensive coping.
Conclusions: the health pattern found to group together the most diagnoses was: activity/exercise. Hospitalized women are generally young women, which corresponds to ages where there are usually no physical problems. Nevertheless, relational factors indicate that severe cognitive-behavioral deterioration together with side effects from antipsychotic medication cause an effect on patients even in cases in which preserved motor ability is preserved. In contrast, this does not happen with the cognitive ability necessary to incorporate sufficient knowledge that promotes self-care. With regard to nursing intervention, the nursing system of educational support is clearly identified (intervention 5510 health education appears to be prescribed in all patients), as claimed by Dorothea Orem in her nursing theory of self-care deficit theory (SCDNT).
