Abstract

The ageing of our population generates a demand for care that matches the profile of the aged individual and his or her health problems. These demands are modulated by the aging process and its symptoms and presentation. Arthrosis, understood to be the erosion or deterioration of the articular cartilage is one of these demands.
Nursing personnel will have to address three aspects in the care of the patient with arthrosis, namely: the presence of chronic pain, alteration of body image and self-esteem, and the deterioration of mobility.
Our aims are, firstly, to perform a review of the published literature within the spanish territory on the above mentioned aspects to serve as the basis for care interventions from the level of primary care for the elderly patient with a diagnosis of arthrosis. And secondly,  a review of the published  papers within the spanish territory on exercise and weight control  by nursing professionals, as these are two key variables to manage the planning of nursing interventions in elderly arthritic patients.
As we can see, while it is true that individual, personalized care of the patient with arthrosis is important, it is also true that from our position as professionals who are near the community, we can embrace this group and carry out interventions of an informational and educational type that amortizes our efforts to improve the quality of life of our patients. This recommendation is clearly endorsed by the findings from the systematic searches conducted with regard to the two factors which need the most control: weight control and regular healthy exercise.
It is thus necessary to unfold information and education programs for the patients and their pathologies and their approach from Health Education and the Promotion of Self-Care.
