Community Nursing at the dawn of modern contraception. Biographical notes on Margaret Sanger
Dissociating the sexual act from reproduction has been a concern of human beings, especially of women, from the beginning of history. A key step in this was the emergence of the contraceptive pill in the sixties of last century. The figure of the community nurse Margaret Sanger was crucial for this achievement. Her personal and professional experiences with disadvantaged class women led her to fight, from a feminist perspective, for women\'s rights and reproductive health.
She edited and disseminated numerous educational publications and came to establish a network of family planning clinics throughout the United States, encountering opposition from various social sectors that even led to her arrest several times and to the closure of her centers. She enhanced research in this field by promoting and funding the research conducted by Gregory Pincus, culminating in the synthesis and marketing of the hormonal contraceptive pill. She also founded and was director of various international organizations dedicated to family planning.
