Abstract

The Regional Government of Extremadura published in 2010 the “Protocol for Diabetic Child/Adolescent Care at School” in response to the demand from parents, health professionals and teachers who requested coordination to face the real problem which arises when a student with diabetes joins a school.
We began the process in a school in our area with two educational interventions: the first aimed at teachers and parents, and the second at fellow students of the pupil with diabetes. We used a participatory methodology mainly through group dynamics activities, working in workshops with a basic content on diabetes, and activities with an objective to be able to resolve situations in the school.
Knowledge and the teacher and student’s attitudes were assessed before and after the workshops, as well as the overall satisfaction on the activity.
The results showed that teachers improved their willingness to act in cases of hypoglycemia, both groups improved their factual knowledge and 97% of attendees rated the intervention as good or very good.
Interventions led teachers and students to develop a positive attitude and normality to the presence of people with diabetes in school and also increased its willingness to act in case of possible acute complications. The protocol reinforces the role of the family nurse as a reference throughout the process, coordinated with parents, teachers and the health team.
