Abstract

Purpose: The main objective was to measure the impact of breast feeding on pain levels in newborns undergoing heel lance, as compared with pain in a control group. Secondary objectives were to describe mothers\' knowledge on breast feeding and to instruct on breast feeding technique to mothers in the intervention group.
Material and methods: This was a comparative randomized pilot study.
Observational scale LLANTO was used to measure pain levels both in the control group and in the intervention group. A test to evaluate knowledge on breast feeding was administered to enrolled mothers.  A validated card was used to record observation of a breast feed in the intervention group.
Results:
- Control group: 11 infants (91.7%) showed severe pain and no infant showed pain absence.
- Intervention group: Only one infant (7.7%) showed severe pain (p < 0.001) and four showed pain absence (31%) (p  = 0.03).

Conclusions: all infants receiving breast feeding showed less pain than controls; a knowledge deficiency regarding breast feeding was detected; breast feeding was correctly performed by most mothers.
