Abstract

Introduction: Scientific research about pressure ulcers (PU) in the geriatric population is a relevant issue in the sanitary world because they involve increased social-sanitary costs and a worsening in the quality of life.
Objectives: To determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with PU in institutionalized patients in a geriatric institution.
Material and methods: The sample consists of patients with high level of assistance that are admitted to a geriatric institution. We performed a descriptive study to determine the prevalence of PU and the characteristics of the sample. Variables are the main factors related with PU.
Results: The prevalence of PU in our study is 19.5%. Risk factors of PU expected, after the bibliographic review are age, immobility, incontinence, for example.
Conclusion: It is important to know the risk factors in order to implement a correct prevention.
