Abstract

Purpose: to describe types of motivation and basic psychological needs (BPN) related to physical activity, as well as resilience of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Health Area III in the Principality of Asturias.
Material and methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in a sample of 235 patients with T2DM based on consecutive sampling in several health centers in the health area. A questionnaire specifically designed to measure motivation in patients with T2DM was used to describe physical activity, and another one was used to measure resilience. The SPSS package version 24.0 was used for data analyses.
Results: near to 80% of interviewees showed motivation to perform routine PA, but only in 23.1% a variation in types of activity is used. A positive correlation was found between motivation to perform PA and time since the diagnosis of the disease, BPN (autonomy, competence and social support), and resilience in interviewees. Additionally, a negative relationship was observed between HbA1c and motivation to perform PA and BPN.
Conclusions: focusing health education in patients with T2DM based on their motivation and BPN related to PA could provide them with a better self-control for the disease, an enhanced quality of life, and avoidance or reduction of their high complications of the disease.
