Abstract

Introduction/purpose: an aging population, with common chronic and demanding disorders is found. Usually, health education programs are targeted to chronic diseases. Training people on self-care for acute disorders appears to be needed. This would provide self-confidence and autonomy to take care of themselves.
We aimed at assessing the efficacy of an health education intervention on core self-care and acute disorders.
Methods: a quasi-experimental interventional study, with no control group, with pre-post measurements in a convenience sample. An intervention intended for people older than 16 years in general population. Four workshops consisting in three weekly 2-hour sessions were given in November/December 2017 by health workers at Primary Care Unit in Zarautz (Basque Country), using an active, participative and reflective teaching method. The content included, among other matters, cough, fever, diarrhea, wounds, injuries or first-aid kits. Data on knowledge about core self-care pre- and post-intervention were collected and assessed using a 18-question ad hoc questionnaire on knowledge.
Results: there were 56 participants. Most of them were women (80%), mean age was 60.2 years. A pre-post improvement of 3.5 right answers was found (95%CI: 2.5-4.5; P < 0.0001); no association with age or sex was observed. Participants showed a high level of satisfaction and demanded an extension of workshops to include additional topics.
Conclusions: the present intervention improves knowledge in participants, and provides them with tools to manage their self-care. It also promotes citizens' participation and contributes to system sustainability.
