Abstract

Purpose: to evaluate an experience of health education (HE) in teenagers on health topics chosen by them, using Instagram. Changes in their knowledge and attitudes, as well as their satisfaction and adherence to the activity, are assessed.
Methods: in the first phase, a descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out, with teenagers selecting three health topic from a list of recommend issues in the literature. The second phase was a quasi-experimental study on the knowledge and attitudes they had before and after a three-week educational intervention using the Instagram tool. A total of 244 students participated in the choice of topics and 204 started the activity on Instagram. Variables: 12 health education topics; 16 pretest and posttest questions regarding knowledge and attitudes; perception of personal improvement; overall satisfaction with the activity.
Findings: the most frequently selected topics were: mental health by 55% of people; sexuality 54%; and first aid 38.5%. At the end of the intervention 155 teenagers were following the Instagram account (attrition rate 24%). Pre-test was completed by 134 participants and post-test by 62. A statistically significant increase (p < 0.05) from the beginning to the end of the intervention was found for six questions. Among the respondents, 61.3% reported that they believed their knowledge to have improved a lot or quite a lot after the intervention. Satisfaction with the overall program was 7.5. Satisfaction with the overall program was 7.5.
Conclusions: Instagram can be an effective short-term tool to deliver HE to teenagers and is well accepted by them.
