Abstract

Objective: to design and validate the educational support materials for Nursing intervention in the competencies of primary caregiver for infants with gastrostomy tubes.

Method: a descriptive and multistage design. It was held in three stages: literature search and analysis, design of educational materials, and validation of materials by technique of expert judges. The PRISMA criteria were used for the selection of the articles in the first stage. Six infographics and a care notebook were designed in the second stage. In the last stage, six judges specialized in Paediatric Nursing evaluated the materials according to the guidelines set by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). Kendall's W Coefficient was applied for concordance among judges.

Results: twelve (12) articles were selected and analysed in the first stage; different care notebooks were also found and used as guidance for the creation of the current materials. In the second stage, six infographs and a care notebook were created with assistance by a graphic designer who collaborated in the visual aspect of the materials. The characteristics of the tube were addressed, its cleaning and care, feeding, medication, and potential complications. In the third stage, materials were considered “acceptable” and “can be used as they are”, according to the PAHO criteria; besides, judges had a statistically significant concordance (p < ,05) with w = .45.

Conclusion: the educational materials created can be used as an educational tool to contribute to continuity of care for infants with gastrostomy tube.
