Abstract

Objective: to analyse the association between social support and resilience in older adults from different towns of the Mezquital Valley, in the state of Hidalgo, Mexico.

Method: an observational, quantitative and cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of 200 older adults from seven different towns of the Mezquital Valley in the state of Hidalgo, Mexico. There was non-probability convenience sampling. Social support was measured with the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) and the Medical Outcomes Study-Social Support Survey (MOS-SSS) instrument. Data analysis was conducted through Fisher’s Exact Test and logistic regression.

Results: older adults who perceived maximum social support had a higher likelihood to present a high level of resilience [MR 7.03 (CI95% 2.76-17.94)]. Significant differences (p< 0,05) were obtained when comparing the marital status and type of housing with the level of resilience of the participants.

Conclusions: the social support received by the older adults from the Mezquital Valley in Hidalgo was a factor associated with their level of resilience.
