Abstract

Objective: the objective of this study was to identify the level of self-management and the health results in older adults with T2DM living in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas (Mexico) during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methodology: a cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted, on a population of 144 older adults belonging to the public support group Adultos Mayores 65 y más (Older adults Over 65), which appears in Facebook social networks. The SMP-T2D PAG- DT2 instrument was applied through web forms using convenience sampling.

Results: it was found that the total mean level of self-management was 48.30 (SD= 13.44), which represents a regular self-management in older adults with diabetes. Adherence to treatment (diet, physical activity and medication intake) was the lowest domain with a mean 23.42 (SD= 14,57). There was lower self-management in the male gender, those who received injected insulin, those with two or more comorbidities and who presented uncontrolled levels of Hb1ac, total cholesterol and triglycerides.

Conclusions: lack of physical activity, inadequate diet and null or sporadic medical care due to COVID-19 lockdown could have an impact on the lack of biochemical control in older adults.
