Abstract

Objective: to understand the differences in smoking cessation practices among the Primary Care staff of the SESPA (Healthcare Services of the Principality of Asturias) according to their own smoking habits during the pandemic period.

Method: an exploratory cross-sectional descriptive study through self-questionnaire, targeted to all Primary Care healthcare professionals and distributed by internal email, conducted between March and June 2021.

Results: a systematic documentation of the smoking cessation process was conducted in 57.03% of cases, and it could be considered low and even non-existent for 25% of smoking persons. The brief advice for smoking cessation was given “always or almost always” on 88.1% of cases. Of the healthcare professionals who smoked in the past, 96.9% were familiar with at least two or more methods for smoking cessation vs. 75% of smoking professionals. 43% of smoking professionals have conducted neither interventions nor referral for treatment during the first year vs. 9.19% of non-smokers, which is

4.7 times less. 13.33% of professionals reported that they always followed up patients, while 28.88% never did this; it must be highlighted that 56% of these were smoking vs. 18.65% of previous smokers.

Conclusions: the greatest practical differences appeared between smokers and previous smokers. Except for the high consensus regarding “brief advice”, the disparity of criteria revealed lack of uniformity associated with personal habits and vague or neglected institutional policies.
